The Shruj

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

– Abraham Lincoln

Great song by two great musicians.

“It’s the heart that really matters in the end…”

My favorite Hindi word (or is it Urdu? I’ve never been too clear on the origin…) ”mitwa” literally means “my beloved” but can have numerous meanings depending on the context in which it is used. This song from the Bollywood filmKabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (Never Say Farewell) captures a lot of those various meanings, both blatant and nuanced, through Shafqat Amanat Ali’s vocal range and SRK and Rani’s body language.

Life often imitates art.

Translation:

Love will find a way

My love, my sweetheart

Tell me, my heart, which way are you headed?

What haven’t you acquired, what are you still looking for?

That which is unsaid, that which is unspoken, tell me what those words are.

My beloved, what do your heartbeats tell you?

My beloved, don’t hide it from yourself

At the crossroads of life, at the shores of love

Ever since someone came into your sights,

You have been wondering, you’ve been asking: is this what’s been missing?

Yes it is, yes it is.

You thirst and she is the river,

Why don’t you just open up and tell her?

That which is unsaid, that which is unspoken, tell me what those words are.

My beloved, what do your heartbeats tell you?

My beloved, don’t hide it from yourself

Your eyes have found the path,

But you still wonder if you should go or not,

This life is asking you to dance, so why are your feet in shackles?

Dance to the melody of love,

Throw caution to the wind,

How can someone deprive themselves this much?

That which is unsaid, that which is unspoken, tell me what those words are.

My beloved, what do your heartbeats tell you?

My beloved, don’t hide it from yourself

Tell me, my heart, which way are you headed?

What haven’t you acquired, what are you still looking for?

Love will find a way…

My beloved, my beloved, my beloved…

Love will find a way
